Reclaiming Your Time: Embracing Power and Refusing to Play Small

Back in 2017, Auntie Maxine, aka Rep. Maxine Waters, dropped a bomb of a phrase that's been my go-to ever since: "Reclaiming my time." When she said that, during a confrontation with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, it wasn't just about that moment. She lit a fire and encapsulated a movement against disrespect, disruption, and the undermining of one's character.

I've been living by these words, and applying them to my personal and professional life. But let's be real, life is full of its ups and downs – there will be fantastic experiences, others, not quite.

In my journey as an independent contractor, I've had the incredible opportunity to work alongside some truly gifted individuals. Their strength and the remarkable outcomes of their efforts never cease to amaze me.

However, I've also crossed paths with those who seem to find comfort in negativity, being manipulative and creating chaos. And trust me, I've got stories! But here's my rule of thumb: If it's not a fit, I'm not forcing it. Period.

When dealing with such challenges, My response is steadfast: trust your instincts, explore your reservations, and never allow anyone to attack your character or dictate how you should feel or act.

Echoing the empowering mantra of "reclaiming my time," a quote that profoundly speaks to me is “Our Deepest Fear”, from Marianne Williamson's book “A Return to Love." It hit me hard when I first heard it in the movie, Coach Carter. A real aha moment.

The line that resonates with me the most is: “Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.” This phrase eloquently reinforces my commitment to living boldly and authentically.

This stance isn't about arrogance; it's about confidence and the refusal to be silenced or marginalized. It's about aligning with your values and morals and not compromising them for short-term gains or instant gratification. Not every opportunity is your golden ticket, and that's okay. Stay grounded in who you are, your values, and your principles. Don't trade in your peace for a quick win.

5 Strategies To Reclaim Your Time

1) Establish Clear Boundaries

Communicate your availability, your limits, and your expectations to others. This helps prevent overcommitment and keeps you from being pulled into situations that drain you or go against your values.

2) Prioritize What Matters

Focus on activities and commitments that align with your goals and bring satisfaction.

3) Practice Discernment in Relationships

Use discernment to identify relationships that uplift and support you, and to distance yourself from toxic or unproductive relationships.

4) Embrace the Power of 'No'

We often overcommit out of fear of missing out (FOMO) or disappointing others. Remember, every 'no' to something that doesn’t serve you is a 'yes' to something that does.

5) Regular Self-Reflection

Regularly take time to reflect on your experiences, feelings, and reactions. This also helps in recognizing patterns, such as consistently feeling drained after certain interactions, enabling you to make informed decisions.

As you navigate your path, stay true to who you are and trust that gut feeling. If something's off, dig deeper. Keep an eye on those who try to tell you how to feel or act, or attack your character. Stand up for what you believe in and what serves you best.

Remember, all business isn't good business, and not every opportunity is right for you. 😉

So stay focused on the goal, choose your peace, and above all… RECLAIM YOUR TIME! 💎
